| About WIAA |
| Q. |
What is the Western India Automobile Association (WIAA)? |
| A. |
The Western India Automobile Association, which was started by a handful of citizens in Mumbai in 1919, is today the largest and oldest motoring body with over 45,000 members. To promote and safeguard the interests of motorists, where they could voice their views and concerns regarding safety and other road related matters to the authorities, it renders various associated services to motorists, including workshops, open forums, awareness drives, etc. Besides providing these additional facilities to its members, the WIAA has made a dedicated effort to strengthen its equation with various government authorities these past decades.
These authorities, in turn have not only acknowledged the activities and the role of the WIAA, but have also lent a receptive ear on matters relating to road taxes, traffic engineering and management and even promotion of tourism.
The scope of WIAA’s activities soon spread from Mumbai to other major cities like Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Goa. The Pune branch was set up in 1935, its first cause taken up being that of constructing a bypass for traffic from Mumbai to Bangalore. This would help overcome traffic congestion and eliminate unnecessary fatalities caused by heavy vehicles passing through the city. WIA’s perseverance paid off after nearly two decades on 31st March 1994. The result – a striking kilometer-long cavalcade of 54 vehicles steered down the 34km long bypass linking Katraj to Dehu Road, commencing the traffic flow on NH4 without it having to enter Pune city.
In 1999, the collaboration between private and government bodies culminated in the installation of 3 prime signals and 3 pedestrian signals at Dorabjee Chowk in the Cantonement area, which was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Poona.
Currently, WIAA has recommended and is working in close co-ordination with the Pune Sub-Area, Pune Cantonement Board and the traffic Police towards improving and decongesting traffic in the Camp area and towards installation of more signals and re-routing of traffic flow where required.
Additionally, WIAA has been appointed by the Pune Regional Transport Office to run the computer monitored simulator center located at RTO Sangam Bridge. This serves as an excellent test to gauge response levels and regulation knowledge of heavy vehicle and bus drivers before they obtain their licenses. WIAA recommends this part of the training to be initiated and inculcated by every transport and bus company owners and all government owned public services towards safer drivers and safety on roads.
