What is the NSCC ? |
| |
NSCC, the National Society for Clean Cities - Pune a registered body first set up in Mumbai about 27 years ago by Mrs. Zehra Ali Yavar Jung, wife of the then Governor of Maharashtra, Mr. Ali Yavar Jung. It was established in Pune 22 years ago. Their main aim is to guide citizens to empower themselves when it comes to asking for their rights and thereby to stimulate local activities. Under the guidance and aegis of the NSCC core group, mohalla committees (or citizens fora, vikas mandals, sudharna samitis, etc.) were set up to pursue issues that affect localities at a micro level. The issues include those like environment and pollution control, vermiculture, waste separation and management, slum development and healthcare, literacy and civic awareness, encroachments and unauthorized structures, violations and misuse of land and floor space index, traffic problems and congestion. However, issues relating to religion, caste, creed or languages are not entertained. NSCC chooses such people who are motivated, conscientious and apolitical, yet professionals with a deep sense of commitment. For a group of 2-3 such persons located in any area, informal discussions are held to convey the methodology and degree of participation, after which it is up to the group to expand to a number that can function ideally and realistically. Although the NSCC observes from the sidelines, they are always around to give constant guidance and monthly review meetings. The NSCC has 22 mohalla committees under its aegis in Pune currently and are constantly on the lookout to spread their network. NSCC members meet once a month at Hotel Blue Diamond to exchange ideas, interact, brainstorm and network.

| Q. |
What is the NSCC’s Agenda? |
| |
Very often we citizens complain about the atrocities and injustice meted out to us in every walk of life. Instead of doing something about it especially doing our bit to bring about a change, we conveniently blame it on the system and continue in the same vein because ‘if we don’t do it someone else will’. To guide and create an attitudinal change in this mindset of the people, the NSCC’s ultimate goal remains to leave behind a legacy for the generations to come that will be beneficial to all and that they will be proud to inherit.
